Château Fougueyrat was run until the Millennium Change by the Nicoux family as a very good Saint Emilion Grand Cru. After all, the excellent terroir where the vineyards thrive testifies to great class. With prestigious Grand Cru Classé neighbors such as Cap de Mourlin, Soutard, Larmande and Dassault, that is difficult to contradict. In 2001, the Mortelmans family acquired the 7 hectares of beautifully situated vineyards with its cellars. To preserve the Château to the select group of Saint Emilion Grand Crus, everything and everyone was promptly re-tuned for quality. The vineyards are located on the famous limestone rock of Saint Emilion and are planted with 85% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. They were realigned and even partially replanted. Thanks to a double pruning (vendanges vertes), nothing but quality is pursued in the vineyards. In the cellars, alcoholic fermentation can be monitored very precisely thanks to small thermo-controlled stainless steel cuves. The education on French oak barrels has been revised, for example 1 / 4th of oak barrels are renewed annually. The remaining wine matures in 1 or 2 year old barrels. Annual investments allow Château Fougueyrat to look forward to a bright future and thanks to his oenologist Stéphane Toutoundji (Château la Serre, Château la Pointe, ...), people are already able to use the most innovative techniques. It can now compete with the best Grand Crus and even Grand Cru Classes, and it can start dreaming back of its status that it enjoyed in 1949, Grand Premier Cru Classé! Thanks to the great preponderance of merlot, Château Fougueyrat is already drinking at an early age, but it can of course face several years of cellar aging. Exceptional volumes such as 2000 & 2005 may not have to shun 20 years of cellar maturation. Château Granchamp is often described as a "little brother" but comes from 1.5 hectares of beautifully situated vineyards from Montagne Saint Emilion. The merlot (100%) grapes come from a single plot of a calcareous soil with a clay-like top layer. This wine has the same education as Château Fougueyrat
